65 Bars And A Taste Of Soul by The Watts 103rd. The 65 bars song was supposed to be a funky instrumental, but I got a ballad with strings. I am not a great lover of most soul music but this is an exception. Charles Watts and the 103 street band played music with the actual soul of what people associate soul music with. it was innovative for it's time. Later bands like the Ohio Players or the Bar Keys followed this tradition but I can't really say progressed it to the point the Funkadellics did or Parliament.
Released in 1968, the second album from the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band finds Charles Wright and company still trying to translate their nightclub and singles success into record album sales. Gadson and McKay would go on to join Earth, Wind & Fire while Dunlap joined Bill Withers' band.
