The Story of the Ghost is the seventh studio album by American rock band Phish, released by Elektra Records on October 27, 1998. The album features an emphasis on the jazz-funk influenced "cow-funk" style, which the group had been experimenting with in concert throughout 1997 and 1998. The album's first single was "Birds of a Feather", which was a Top 20 hit on Billboard magazine's Adult Alternative Songs chart.

Because of this unhurried vibe, some may be tempted to dismiss Ghost as a song cycle for bong huggers. But once the buzz wears off, Phish still sound fresh. Among the disc’s abundant charms: the loveliness of the melodies; the intricate but understated interaction of the instruments; and the life-affirming glow of the lyrics, as Phish continue their relentless attack on post-grunge self-pity. Not everything works. On these tunes, Phish’s fluid interplay is the primary attraction. But the soul of Story reveals itself during the album’s second half, where simplicity, directness and brevity prevail. Limb by Limb layers voices into a call-and-response dialogue with a hint of reggae in the simmering syncopations.

But Phish has never been a very literary group; instead, its fervent cult feasts on the technical agility of the band's prime and skilled instrumentalists, which is on grand display here. Yet, whatever charm that might come through at a Phish concert still can't quite transcend itself to record. Despite some good songs (the opening story-setting "Ghost," the groovy "Birds of a Feather," the strolling "Guyute") in a typically tuneless batch, The Story of the Ghost is occasionally sloppy, a bit smug, and often quite boring

After completing Fiendish, Xavier was convinced he had the resources to record his songs from the aborted album Ghost Story. He and drummer Rich Hutchins reunited to redo that album with Gabriel Moffat producing and mixing. Feel the Radiation" (04:02). A Curse of Miracles" (06:25). Wily Creilly" (05:24). Beyond the Shadow of Doubt" (07:45). Ghostforest" (05:45). Universally" (05:45).

This rare find is unopened. The grading on the sleeve is conservative at VG with a couple of minor flaws on two corners (see pictures). I will package it carefully and securely

I purchased my copy of this LP back around 2000 at a record shop while vacationing in Bar Harbor, ME. It was sealed and upon opening it, I discovered that there was no insert that appears to be included in this release. The LP just came in a generic white inner sleeve. I'm just wondering if anyone else has this LP and didn't get the printed insert with lyrics? Either way, I'm wicked happy that I own this LP since it's so rare and is one of my favorite Phish albums. Even though this could have been a 2-LP pressing considering the album's length, this is an incredible pressing that doesn't seem to have much inner groove distortion at all.
Now that Billy is out, I think they'll release Ghost at the festival this summer. It's possible for black friday RSD.....either way, it's coming....
Bummer about the no-insert... the sleeve is white generic in my copy too, came that way. Maybe a partial run of these skipped the factory's quality control without inserts? Either way, it really is an awesome LP to own. Wish I would have plucked up Farmhouse back then, too! Do i sense a record store day reissue soon?.... 2xLP 45s would be awesome for both albums.
Why, oh- why, did I not buy more copies of this back in '99-2000, when it cost all of ~$14?? What a lovely album. This band re-instilled my faith in music,; when the majority of people my age were blasting Eminem and Limp Bizkit, I was improv-jamming with my old buds and getting elevated on jam-talent from Phish, Keller Williams, SCI, and for my generation's, "British Invasion," a healthy dose of Radiohead. The Story of the Ghost is the first Phish album which dug its way extraordinarily deep into my heart. The crafting of the songs, the heart in the studio performances, the purity in the vocals that wove this awesome work of art; it's what an album should be.My copy has dust, a slight inaudible warp, and plays superbly. I am planning on having it cleaned professionally, and protecting it better now that I know how rare it is. I will never- ever -even between the hardest of places and most rocky surface- come off of it. HAD I purchased a plethora of these, if after gifting best friends who would cherish and care for it properly, I can say it would still be hard to consider letting any ficticious "extra" copy of this go. This is one of the best sounding records I own. A magical gem for any true Phish Phan.
A few years late here, but uh... Can I come over and listen, ? ;-)
Could not agree more with your assessment here Ecksmega. I wish I had bought a bunch of these too. What an extraordinary moment in time they captured on these studio sessions, probably at the height of their creative energy and certainly the basis of most of the jams they still conduct in concert.
I hope you’ve found a gig and kept your goods man.
I have to eat my words. I have become unemployed and need to come up with rent money. Don't be surprised if it winds up on the market soon, as I've got no idea how else to make ends meet until I find employment! So, "the rock and a hardest place," is actually a bit more of a squeeze than I'd imagined.
