Mahler Symphony N. 0 - Adagio. Other Versions (5 of 8) View All. Cat.Gustav Mahler, Symphonica Of London - Symphony N. In C Sharp Major (CD, Album).
Symphony No. 10 by Gustav Mahler was written in the summer of 1910, and was his final composition. At the time of Mahler's death the composition was substantially complete in the form of a continuous draft, but not fully elaborated or orchestrated, and thus not performable. Only the first movement is regarded as reasonably complete and performable as Mahler intended.
This Warner Classics reissue of Klaus Tennstedt's EMI recordings of the complete symphonies is a case in point, because the London Philharmonic Orchestra was not in the first rank of Mahler ensembles, and there are several instances of loose playing and occasional signs of fatigue. Yet Tennstedt brought an extraordinary spirit to the symphonies and inspired the LPO to show real passion and power, despite its technical problems, and the performances are frequently compelling, especially the Symphony No. 6 in A minor, "Tragic," and the Symphony No. 9 in D major. 10 in F sharp minor (incomplete): V. Finale (sketches). 6. Symphony No. 8 in E flat major ('Symphony of a Thousand'). 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. I've lived with the London SO/ Bernstein performance of the "1000" Symphony since 1962, and though it contains some astounding playing and singing I've never quite been satisfied with it. I suspect that Lennie wasn't that satisfeid with it either, if comparisons with this later VPO performance is any indication.
