Elvis Costello was quickly developing into one of rock’s best songwriters when his second album dropped in 1978. Droll themes veer from neo-Nazi stupidity ( Night Rally ) to romantic ennui ( No Action ) to condemnations of commercialized airwaves ( Radio Radio ), and the soulfully tender Little Triggers defines heartbreak like Burt Bacharach.
After releasing My Aim Is True, Costello assembled a backing band called the Attractions, which were considerably tougher and wilder than Clover, who played on his debut. The Attractions were a rock & roll band, which gives This Year's Model a reckless, careening feel. It's nervous, amphetamine-fueled, nearly paranoid music - the group sounds like they're spinning out of control as soon as they crash in on the brief opener, "No Action," and they never get completely back on track, even on the slower numbers.
I'm surprised at how much I dug this album and how much I would be down to listen to it again soon. Usually albums don't feel worth chunking through a second time right away, but that speaks to the quality of this album and how much replay value it has now forty years since its release.
