Artists United Against Apartheid was a 1985 protest group founded by activist and performer Steven Van Zandt and record producer Arthur Baker to protest against apartheid in South Africa. The group produced the song "Sun City" and the album Sun City that year, which is considered a notable anti-apartheid song. Sun City was a place where the South African government allowed entertainment that was banned in most of the country.

The Sun City Project gratefully acknowleges the support of the Special Committee Against Apartheid of the United Nations. Special thanks to Jonathan Ehrlich of Levine & Epstein. Special thanks to Bobby Nathan, Joanne Georgio & Mary Cullum. Special thanks to Mitch & Ira Yuspeh In addition to the musicians, Studios, engineers and photographers we would also like to thank the following people who donated their time and services to help in the completion of this record. Bill Adler, Sean Murphy, Pablo Guzman, Nelson George.

Sun City was a 1985 album that contained several versions of the Steven Van Zandt-led Artists United Against Apartheid's "Sun City" protest song against apartheid in South Africa as well as other selections in the same vein from that project. In addition to the title track, other songs were recorded at the time completed an album's worth of material.

Artists United Against Apartheid was organized by "Little Steven" Van Zandt, who discovered Sun City when he traveled to Africa after leaving Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in 1985. Van Zandt considered naming artists who played the Sun City resort in the song, but decided not to. He asked them to participate in the project instead. Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, Run-D. Lou Reed, Bonnie Raitt, Bono, Melle Mel, Keith Richards, Jackson Browne, and George Clinton are some of the 54 artists who contributed to the song.

That we can dance while we're organizing is this record's greatest triumph. After all, only a few years before making his big splash, Crenshaw had been touring the United States as an ersatz John Lennon in various national companies of the successful pseudo-Fab Four musical Beatlemania. Tiring of that well-paying gig, Crenshaw decided to leave the show and work on his own music.

Studio album by Artists United Against Apartheid. Sun City was a 1985 album that contained several versions of the Steven Van Zandt-led Artists United Against Apartheid's "Sun City" protest song against apartheid in South Africa as well as other selections in the same vein from that project. Side A. Side B. Bonus track.

Artists United Against Apartheid was a 1985 protest group founded by activist and performer Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven) and record producer Arthur Baker to protest apartheid in South Africa. Apartheid was a system of racial segregation between years 1948 - 1994. The rights of the majority non-white inhabitants of South Africa were curtailed and white supremacy was maintained. Sun City was (and still is) a luxury casino and resort situated in South Africa. It was founded in the late 70's. Also many African American artists performed in Sun City during the apartheid. One of the controversial things about African American acts going to South Africa to play Sun City was that the South African government would label the artist "honorary whites". Their ears and minds must have been burning when hearing the Sun City lyrics: "Twenty-three million can't vote 'cause they're black.
