Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler almost always referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem or tone poem. The work was premièred at the Vigadó Concert Hall, Budapest, in 1889, but was not well received.

Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, commonly known as the "Unfinished", was started in 1822 but left with only two movements complete even though Schubert would live for another six years. Berliner Philharmoniker.
I loved the Prague coupled with Schubert's Unfinished but no 40 was new to me. These two works can also be bought on a double CD with symphonies nos 25 & 29 Britten's performance of the Prague symphony is more or less how I remembered it - beautifully phrased and the wonderful subsidary theme in the slow movement floats magically by the violins being particularly memorable. And Britten's interpretation of no 40 is the best I know. The first and most important is that it is an excellent performance, of both symphonies but especially of the 40th, his great G Minor symphony, K. 550, one of the most familiar of Mozart's works to most classical music lovers. Benjamin Britten recorded this performance in the Maltings, Snape, in May 1968, and it sounds as excellent today as I'm sure it did when it was first recorded nearly a half century ago.
