Felix Pappalardi was most famous as the producer of Cream and the bassist for one of the first American hard rock acts, Mountain; sadly, he's also remembered for the tragic shooting that claimed his life at age 43. Pappalardi was born December 20, 1939, in the Bronx and studied classical music at the University of Michigan; upon returning to New York, he was unable to find work as a conductor and soon drifted into the Greenwich Village folk scene. In 1979, Pappalardi released his first proper solo album, Don't Worry, Ma, which reflected his growing interest in funk, jazz fusion, and reggae, and featured a large supporting cast, including bassist Chuck Rainey and drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. On the night of April 17, 1983, tragedy struck: Pappalardi was shot once in the neck by his wife, Gail Collins, and killed. Takeda contacted Felix Pappalardi and asked him to produce the second Creation LP.
Not surprisingly, the music, most of it co-written by Pappalardi and his wife, Gail Collins (who also contributed to Mountain), sounds a lot like the melodic hard rock style of Mountain. Pappalardi had a light tenor voice that was sometimes heard in Mountain when the singing wasn't done by the gruff-voiced West, and it is better on the ballads; on the rockers, West is missed.
This two-fer CD brings back into print the two albums from the second half of the 1970s on which Felix Pappalardi, a noted producer whose clients included Cream and the former bassist for Mountain, took center stage. If the albums have languished in obscurity, it may be because they were not commercially successful at the time, and because Pappalardi's premature death in 1983 abruptly ended his career
