Ewan MacColl created eight radio-ballads between 1957 and 1962 in collaberation with Peggy Seeger and the radio producer Charles Parker (2). This one was originally transmitted on the BBC Home Service on 16 August 1960. It won the Prix d'Italia in October 1960. Código de Barras e Outros Identificadores.

Sample this album Artist (Sample). I remember, back in the early sixties, my Dad telling me how wonderful Ewan McColl's radio ballads and particularly Singing the Fishing were. The problem was I had to take that on faith because they had only been heard on radio and had never been issued on record. Sure, some of the songs (The Shoals of Herring, the North Sea Holes and others) had made it onto record but I had no way of knowing what a masterpiece this was. Finally, in the 70s, it got published on Argo.

The mix of field recordings, music, and recording techniques served them well for a radio show which proved to be groundbreaking, with the trio having learned from their two previous radio ballads, with the epic track "Up Jumped the Herring" a true standout.
