It's still far from g, however; the melodies are sometimes a bit wacky and mischievous, and there's a detached trippiness to slower numbers like "The Runner" and "Bore & Stroke.

The best rock, hip-hop, EDM and country of this year’s first half. While the biggest names in dance music are raging on the blacktop, delivering hard beats to parking lots filled with sweaty festival-goers, Todd Terje is poolside, offering a cabana-ready combination of Patrick Cowley disco synths and Herb Alpert's Tijuana kitsch. Though the Norwegian remix champ has a few proven dancefloor fillers like "Inspector Norse" and "Strandbar," his debut's most affecting moment is "Johnny and Mary," a half-time Robert Palmer cover on which a weary Bryan Ferry sings of two people treading water in life's deep end.
Patrick Cowley - Afternooners It's safe to say that no one watches porn for the music. In fact, porn soundtracks, especially from the '70s and '80s, are widely ridiculed for their lowbrow funk clichés. Anyone familiar with vintage gay porn-something of a fetishized genre nowadays-will know the typical sounds: funky wah-wah guitar, cheap synths, sometimes an odd sense of drama that doesn't really fit what it's depicting. San Francisco labels Honey Soundsystem and Dark Entries have pored through Cowley's archives and collected the best of his gay porn soundtracks into multiple albums-the murky beats of School Daze and the slightly funkier Muscle Up. Completing the trilogy, Afternooners compiles songs from a 1982 soundtrack made shortly before Cowley's death from AIDS, and includes some early sketches for his studio album Mind Warp.
