Cover notes: "LA MOVIDA" - A MUSICAL HISTORY The year was 1980, the musical phrase "Tejano" had not even been thought of yet. Accordion and horns were the accepted instruments in Tex-Mex music. It was into this era that a young musical group full of enthusiasm called "La Movida" made their dynamic appearance. Led by rocker guitarist Ricky Smith "La Movida" was the first tejano group to introduce flanged guitar leads into most of their recordings. They were also one of the earliest groups to rely on solely their own material, as bass player Javier Canales, Ricky Smith, and vocalist Pio Trevino penned all the recorded compositions. "La Movida", which translates as secret lover, was the first group to heat up the scene with their bad boy image, an image that was different from all the other spanish groups that came before them. Their album covers of women clothed only in sexy underclothes were daring departures from the standard three piece suits of their predecessors. Yet the music of "La Movida" was embraced by Latin audiences of all ages. The influence of "La Movida" can still be heard in the sounds of Tejano music today. In later years, vocalist Pio Trevino, went on to form his own group "Majic" and received a grammy nomination in 1989 for the song "Quiero Verte Otra Vez" a song written years earlier by his friend "La Movida" bass player Javier Canales. From 1980 till now "La Movida" has earned a place in Tejano history as one of the first musical groups to bridge the gap between young generation and old generation Latin music listeners.
