The album features 13 originals tracks and showcases many of Clark's signature moves. Clark blends his usual styles of blues, rock and soul music, with occasional touches of Hip Hop and R&B, to create his signature sound. The albums title was created by blending his two childhood nicknames. Sonny Boy was the nickname his mother gave him, whilst Slim was given to him on the Austin Texas Blues scene and referred to his tall and thin physical build. It reached number one on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart in October that year.
Gary Clark J. s versatility is both blessing and curse. The Austin ace’s 2012 breakthrough album, Blak and Blu, shuffle-mixed through blues roots; raw, Hendrix-channeling solos; glossy, modern R&B; and points between, but never quite figured out how to connect the dots. Three years later, his studio follow-up does - mainly by focusing on his unfuckwithable guitar. Clark carves out a Prince-ly room of his own with wah-wah-washed acid rock ( Grinder ) and ping-ponging, Bootsy-tinted funk ( Star )
Album · 2015 · 13 Songs. There's no question that Texas-based singer/guitarist Gary Clark Jr. can shred with the best of them. But on his second major-label full-length, it's his restraint that's his trump card. He gently dabs the minimalist blues-rocker "The Healing" with little more than a . King-style riff and a poker-hot vocal, keeping the song gorgeously unfussy. Just as expressive is the stomping "Grinder", which features a literally screaming guitar lick that mimics the line it follows: "My baby's crying/So now my baby's crying.

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Clark played small gigs throughout his teens, until he met promoter Clifford Antone, proprietor of the Austin music club Antone's. Antone's was the launch pad from which Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan redefined blues at the time. Soon after meeting Clifford, Clark began to play with other musical icons, including Jimmie Vaughan. Vaughan and others in the Austin music community helped Clark along his musical path Clark also had a guest appearance on Tech N9ne's album The Storm. The album was released on December 9, 2016.
