Jordi Savall’s ensemble is well-equipped to project the skilfully wrought structures and expressive allure of the music. Some of the pieces fare better than others in respect of vocal texture and ensemble. Tenors and basses occasionally lack tonal refinement but, at their strongest the performances provide a radiant conspectus of Guerrero’s masterly motets Related Releases: Jordi Savall - Johann Sebastian Bach: Messe En Si Mineur BWV 232 (2013) Jordi Savall, Hesperion XX - Samuel Scheidt: Ludi Musici Hambourg, 1621 (1997) Jordi Savall, Le Concert des Nations - Le Concert Spirituel: Au temps de Louis XV (2010) Montserrat Figueras, Jordi Savall, Hesperion XX - Lope De Vega: Intermedios del Barroco Hispanico (1991).

In 1974 Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras joined with Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith to found the ensemble Hespèrion XX, which since the year 2000 has been known as Hespèrion XXI. In ancient Greek, the word Hesperien referred to the two most westerly peninsulas in Europe: the Iberian and the Italian; it was also used for the planet Venus. The vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya was founded in 1987 by Montserrat Figueras and Jordi Savall with the goal of exploring and performing Spanish vocal polyphony before 1800. Their model was the royal vocal ensembles known in medieval times as the Capelles Reials or Chapels Royal, for whom the great sacred and secular works of the Iberian peninsula were composed.

The hallmark of this ensemble is its approach to performance, which balances meticulous vocal sound quality and appropriateness to the style of the period with expressive diction and projection of the poetic text, always striving above all to convey the spiritual and artistic dimension peculiar to each individual work

Hespèrion XX favored a style of interpretation characterized simultaneously by great musical vitality and maximum historical accuracy. In 1987 he returned to Barcelona to found La Capella Reial de Catalunya, a vocal ensemble devoted to ry music. In 1989 he founded Le Concert des Nations, an orchestra generally emphasizing Baroque period, but sometimes also Classical and even Romantic music such as, for example, Sinfonía Grande Orquesta by Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga) (1806-1826). 2010 - MIDEM Classical Award for his album "Jerusalem – la ville des deux Paix: La paix céleste et la paix terrestre". 2011 - Grammy Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance for Dinastia Borja.
