Visual Sound Theories is the video complement to Steve Vai's double-CD Sound Theories Vols. 1-2, which finds the guitarist working with an orchestra, the Holland Metropole Orkest, in a concert of his music. In the hourlong main part of the performance, taking up the first 12 tracks, the orchestra backs Vai up on some of his familiar tunes from earlier albums such as Passion and Warfare ("Answers," "Liberty," "For the Love of God") and Real Illusions: Reflections ("Lotus Feet"), set to full orchestral instrumentation by a team of orchestrators.

Only for completionists (0%). Recording live with the Metropole Orchestra, Sound Theories shows updated versions of some of his classics as well as some original compositions. Vai always did strive to be more of a composer than shred guitarist. In fact, many of his older songs played here sound fully realized with orchestral backing, as if they'd been missing some key element. The album/concert is effectively split into two sections: the run through of Vai's hits, and then the original tracks he crafted with the orchestra in mind. What is incredibly surprising is how he wrote scant guitar parts for these tunes
