The Mountain is the eighth studio album by Steve Earle (backed the Del McCoury Band), released in 1999 (see 1999 in music). The songs were written by Earle with musical accompaniment provided by the famous bluegrass band of Del McCoury. The album was a significant departure from Earle's previous work, being the first wholly bluegrass album he had written. Earle made the album as a tribute to the founder of bluegrass music, Bill Monroe, who had died in 1996.

Earle released his first novel and fourteenth studio album, both entitled I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive after a Hank Williams song, in the spring of 2011. The album was released on April 26, 2011 and was produced by T Bone Burnett and deals with questions of mortality with a "more country" sound than his earlier work. Recorded covers of Alejandro Escovedo's "Paradise" and Warren Zevon's "Reconsider Me" with Reckless Kelly, for Escovedo and Zevon tribute albums. Collaborated with the Del McCoury Band on The Mountain (1999). Performed a duet with Lucinda Williams on "You're Still Standin' There".

What'll You Do About Me by Steve Earle. All you wanted was a one night stand. The fire, the wine, and the touch of a man. I fell in love an ruined all your plans. What'll you do about me? Imagine the faces on your high class friends. When I bang on the door and I beg to come in. I'll scream "Come on, love me again". What'll you do about me? Well, you can change your number. You can change your name. You can ride like hell on the midnight train. That's all right, mama, that's .

Steve Earle was the second artist to record the song, doing so also in 1984, on Epic Records. Released as a single that year, Earle's rendition peaked at number 76 on the country charts. This version was not included on an album however until 2005, when Koch Records included it on a re-issue of the 1987 compilation Early Tracks. All you wanted was a one night stand The fire of the wine and the touch of a man But I fell in love and ruined all of your plans So what'll you do about me? Imagine the faces on your high class friends When I beat on the door and I beg to come in Screaming "come on, love me again" What'll you do about me?

He showed me how he laid out songs on a page. Why are you writing with a pen? You need a pencil. I paid attention to all of it, Earle says. And I knew if you wrote songs like, I knew what what you were up against. People would tell you it needed to be a certain length, that it needed this kind of chorus and da da da da da. Earle’s own work would follow Clark’s disregard for rules.

Steve Earle, ‘Guitar Town’. I got a two-pack habit and a motel tan, Earle sings on the title track. By the time he released his debut at 31, he had done two stints in Nashville as a songwriter and he wanted something else. Guitar Town is the rocker’s version of country, packed with songs about hard living in the Reagan Eighties. Coldplay, ‘A Rush of Blood to the Head’. Coldplay churn out bighearted British guitar rock on their second album – what Chris Martin aptly called "emotion that can make you feel sad while you're moving your legs.
