John Robert Cocker OBE (20 May 1944 – 22 December 2014), better known as Joe Cocker, was an English singer. He was known for his gritty voice, spasmodic body movement in performance, and distinctive versions of popular songs of varying genres. Cocker's recording of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" reached number one in the UK in 1968
It features hit singles "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "Don't You Love Me Anymore", the first made popular after its use in the famous striptease scene in the film 9 1/2 Weeks. Released as a single, Cocker's version of the song peaked at No. 35 on Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. The album also features rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues", a Motown legend's classic lament to urban decay.
Joe Cocker‘s 1978 album Luxury You Can Afford included his le treatment, and the same year the song reinforced its endless versality in a disco-to-pop crossover by Munich Machine. One wonders many other compositions could then have added early 1980s versions by Bonnie Tyler and Willie Nelson. Another great vocalist to lend his talents to ‘Whiter Shade’ was Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, who included it on his Classic Blue album with Mike Batt and the London Symphony Orchestra in 1989. Six years later, it was also a well-remembered part of Annie Lennox’s Medusa album
Procol Harum Pedigree Part One. 1967 to 1977. The Procol Harum story starts in Southend-on-Sea, UK, where several schoolfriends came together as The Paramounts. By the middle of 1963 they were ready to turn pro. and their reputations spread nationally after the Rolling Stones dubbed them the best R&B group in the country. None of their singles took off, though the Leiber-Stoller cover Poison Ivy had some success. Whoever they were, they probably rehearsed material that would end up on the first album, plus Alpha, Homburg, and In the Wee Small Hours. but seems to have left no recorded traces. It was managed by the legendary Guy Stevens.
