The album was produced by Eddie Kramer, who had previously worked with Joe Cocker and Jimi Hendrix. The album included her first Top 10 hit, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", a somber ballad centered on a woman pondering marriage with a sense of both inevitability and entrapment; the song was written by Simon and collaborator Jacob Brackman.

Besides the same-named single, the album also featured Simon's "I Am a Rock", a song that first appeared on his 1965 debut solo album, The Paul Simon Songbook. The Paul Simon Songbook (1965). This summer, Paul Simon brings his touring career to an end – 54 years after he thought it was over. When Simon and Garfunkel’s 1964 debut sank without a trace, the 24-year-old travelled to England, miserable and dejected, and shrugged out this solo album. Several tracks – including Kathy’s Song and I Am a Rock – now rank among his best-loved songs. 9. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme (Simon and Garfunkel, 1966)
Life is a lottery/A lot of people lose. For the first time in his career, Simon introduces characters in songs that appear on different tracks later on the album. For example, the central charter from Street Angel pops up again in In A Parade. The idea of finishing one song and having the character appear in another song appeals to me, he says. The album is co-produced by 81-year-old Roy Halee, whose working relationship with Simon goes back to the original Simon and Garfunkel demos in 1964. They went on to collaborate on all five Simon and Garfunkel albums along with Simon’s self-titled solo debut, Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints. He retired, but I always liked working with him more than anyone else, says Simon.

Paul Simon was always an uneasy folksinger, a role his record company tried to push him into starting with Simon & Garfunkel's debut album. Before that, along with New York City pal and musical partner Art Garfunkel, Simon formed Tom & Jerry, an Everly Brothers-style duo, in the late '50s that led to their folk career the next decade
If any musical justification were needed for the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel, it could be found on this striking collection, Paul Simon's post-split debut. From the opening cut, "Mother and Child Reunion" (a Top Ten hit), Simon, who had snuck several subtle musical explorations into the generally conservative S&G sound, broke free, heralding the rise of reggae with an exuberant track recorded in Jamaica for a song about death
