The Black Star Line (1919−1922) was a shipping line incorporated by Marcus Garvey, the organizer of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), and other members of the UNIA. The shipping line was created to facilitate the transportation of goods and eventually African Americans throughout the African global economy. It derived its name from the White Star Line, a line whose success Garvey felt he could duplicate.

Black Star Liner were formed in Leeds in 1994, by Choque Hosein, Tom Salmon, and Chris Harrop. Their music consisted of a mix of Asian music (sitar and tabla), dance music and dub. They formed Soundclash Records to release their initial recordings - "Smoke the Prophets" EP, and "High Turkish Influence". After receiving the single of the week award in the NME magazine for "Smoke the Prophets", they recorded three Peel Sessions, the first of which was broadcast in April 1995.
Kwame Nkrumah commissioned the square to honour the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Construction ended in 1961, and it was named 'Black Star Square'. Black Star Square is a site for Ghana's Independence Day parade, which falls on the 6th of March every year. It also hosts all major national public gatherings and national festivals.

Among the newborn country’s ventures was a government-owned shipping company, the Black Star Line (BSL). It was not the first shipping line to bear that name. American civil rights leader Marcus Garvey started a shipping company called the Black Star Line in 1919, the name being a take on the White Star Line, which included the infamous RMS Titanic.
