Earthling (stylised as EART HL I NG) is the 20th studio album by English recording artist David Bowie. It was originally released in February 1997 on Arista Records. It was the first album Bowie self-produced since his 1974 album Diamond Dogs.

Bowie begins Earthling, his first self-produced album since 1974’s Diamond Dogs, with an explosion of clattering beats and screeching electronics that coalesce into the album’s dramatic single, Little Wonder. He uses drum-and-bass music - the current rage among British techno DJs - as a rhythmic foundation throughout, upping the intensity of songs like Telling Lies and the classic Man Who Sold the World vibe of Battle for Britain (The Letter). On Earthling he returns to the subject of space, a fascination for Bowie since 1969’s Space Oddity. In the shuffling, carnivallike Looking for Satellites, he sings, There’s something in the sky/Shining in the light/Spinning far away, before his voice conjures up the ghost of John Lennon in the final line, Who do we look to now?

Though he often gets the sound of jungle right, the record frequently sounds as if the beats were simply grafted on top of pre-existing songs. Never are the songs broken open by a new form; they are fairly conventional Bowie songs with fancy production

David Bowie was coming from a very good epoch. In some interviews, he stated that we was finding his true essence. He started to experiment with sound and lyrics. He started to get involved with drum n'bass atmosphere. In an interview with The Seattle Times, Bowie said: Unlike most drum and bass things, we didn’t just take parts from other people’s records and sample them. Then we speeded those up to your regular 160 beats per minute. That’s very much how we treat the album. We kept all sampling in-house and created our own soundscape in a way. About the meaning of the songs, David Bowie stated that all of them keep some similarities between them. Bowie has always been a very spiritual person that has always fought to see if he find his own spiritual balance. He said in an interview to QMagazine

A couple of people say that this was his comeback album, but I think Bowie had made his comeback in 1993 with "The Buddha of Suburbia. It's a shame they put that out of print. The title track is one of his best songs of all time.

Though, with Bowie, we might have to nix the & earth’ part. Many have called Bowie an alien-like presence in rock and roll, and he even played one in the film, The Man Who Fell to Earth. But enough has already been said of Bowie’s chameleon like career, fitting into and even preceding every trend. It’s been five years since we’ve had an album release from Mr. Stardust and I’m beginning to worry. We’re not quite up to longest drought of six years (between Never Let Me Down and Black Tie White Noise), but we’re getting closer every day.
