The long compositions are modernized with the sort of croaky vocals and spiky guitars familiar from Bright Eyes and Cursive. The album opens with its strongest track, "Las Cruces Jail". Lonesome whistles set the scene for this yowling cow-punk stomper.
What The Toll Tells is a majestic ode to pride, sporting a rich sound and Two Gallants most energetic songs.
This album is the second release from the San Francisco folk-punk duo, Two Gallants, and their first on Saddle Creek records. The signing garnered them some more attention from fans of the other bands on Saddle Creek, such as Bright Eyes, it didn't have an affect on the greatness of their music at all. This album is still filled with folk classics just as The Throes was. The record starts off with the first single of the album, Las Cruces Jail. This song has a lot of energy in it and is a really nice album opener.

Release Date: Record label: Genre(s): Rock. 100 Music-Critic Score How the Music Critic Score works. Two Gallants - 'What the Toll Tells' by: Richard Terry. It has been rumoured that in certain South Yorkshire haunts, fake tales of San Francisco echo around the room. However, with singer Chelsea Jackson sounding like he is living every impassioned lyric, there appears to be little fake about this, the second LP from 'frisco based duo Two Gallants. It is on tracks such as the stunning Steady Rollin' and Lazy Summer Day, that Two Gallants really come into their own. The former is a contemporary Blues song that makes lyrics such as 'if you've got a throat, I've got a knife' sound strangely romantic while Lazy Summer Day is a haunting tale of persecution and retribution that showcases Jackson's ability to put a story to music.
Two Gallants is a band set out to tell a breathtaking, passionate story. Rather than using pictures or filling up hundreds of pages with words, they have chosen music as their medium with which to tell their story, or rather a novella. A novella is described as short prose being either satire or teaching a moral. What the Toll Tells is a passionate tale of murder, running away, jail, patriotism, and racism sending its listener rollicking through what feels much like the Old West with its references to Billy the Kid and its setting which seems to exist in that cowboy past
What the Toll Tells is the second album recorded by Two Gallants released in February 2006 (see 2006 in music). It was recorded at Tiny Telephone Studios, San Francisco in during July 2005. This album is the 91st release of Saddle Creek Records. The album received a high score of 71 on metacritic.
