Trout Mask Replica is the third studio album by American rock band Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released as a double album on June 16, 1969 by Straight Records. Combining elements of R&B, garage rock, and blues with free jazz, avant-garde approaches, and other genres of American music, the album is regarded as an important work of experimental music and art rock.
Captain Beefheart’s 1969 masterpiece set an unmatched standard for avant-rock. This new reissue from Third Man puts it back in print on vinyl. And though Beefheart could be pathologically controlling with his bandmates, he was surprisingly open to chance and accident throughout Trout Mask Replica.
Trout Mask Replica is Captain Beefheart's masterpiece, a fascinating, stunningly imaginative work that still sounds like little else in the rock & roll canon. Given total creative control by producer and friend Frank Zappa, Beefheart and his Magic Band rehearsed the material for this 28-song double album for over a year, wedding minimalistic R&B, blues, and garage rock to free jazz and avant-garde experimentalism
Trout Mask Replica is the third studio album by American rock band Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released on June 16, 1969. Produced by Beefheart's friend and former schoolmate Frank Zappa, it was originally released as a double album on Zappa's Straight Records label Most of Trout Mask Replica was recorded in March 1969 at Whitney Studios in Glendale, California. The album's highly unconventional musical style, which includes polyrhythm, multi-octave vocals, and atonality, continues to polarize audiences, and has contributed to its reputation as one of the most challenging recordings in the 20th century musical canon.
Trout Mask Replica is an amazing and inventive album, Beefheart is a musical genius but unfortunately he didnt get much recognition because of the era this album was released in and the fact that Beefheart is a crazy pimp. This album contains 28 tracks and clocks in at around 75 minutes long. I realize that this sounds very overbearing and considering the fact that I recently described this album as extremely unconventional and abstract just stick with me, Ill explain everything . All in all Captain Beefheart and his Magic band do an excellent job instrumentally, and they borrow influences from every rock related genre in the process. Trout Mask Replica has a very sleazy, trippy, greasy, detached, and raw feel. Throughout the 28 tracks everything is sloppy and unorganized.
Master, master This is recorded through a flies ear And you have to have a flies eye to see it It's the thing that's gonna make Captain Beefheart And his magic band fat Frank it's the big hit It's the blimp, It's the blimp Frank It's the blimp When I see you floatin' down. Sure did It's beautiful I think that we have enough on the tape to uh Just use that as is for the album Ok, I'm gonna listen to it back now I gotta go back to work.
