The most fun and fascinating piece here is "Guabi Guabi," an African folk song that Elliott learned by copying the vocal inflections. Of course, in his typical fashion, he talks through part of song explaining that he couldn't understand a certain section of the original. In his off the cuff, just for the hell of it way, Elliott has more in common with the Holy Modal Rounders than traditionalists like Pete Seeger or the New Lost City Ramblers. Jack Elliott manages to pay its respects to public domain material while still being entertaining.

Our love had been so strong for far too long, I was weak with fear that Something would go wrong, Before the possibilities came true, I took all possibility from you Almost laughed myself to tears, Conjuring her deepest fears (come here you fucking bitch). I gotta make up for what I've done 'Cause I was all up in a piece of heaven While you burned in hell, no peace forever. Cause I really always knew that my little crime Would be cold that's why I got a heater for your thighs And I know, I know it's not your time But bye, bye And a word to the wise when the fire dies You think it's over but it's just begun But baby don't cry.

Songs like that come out in five minutes; if I work on them more than, say, 20 minutes, they’re probably not going to work. Read Jay-Z’s full essay here. In the early 1990s, Cuomo had an awkward girlfriend who was routinely picked on. His efforts to stick up for her inspired Weezer's breakthrough, a track whose bubble-grunge hooks and lines such as "I look just like Buddy Holly/And you're Mary Tyler Moore" helped the band reach a nation of pop-minded suburban punks. It also earned Weezer autographed photos from the real Mary Tyler Moore.
