Daniel Barenboim: The Chopin Concertos. Alfried Krupp Saal the Philharmonie Essen. The concertos were recorded live at the 2010 Ruhr Piano Festival, so there are some incidental noises that serve as reminders, especially whenever Barenboim thumps his foot, but the sound is surprisingly clean, close-up, and vivid for a concert recording.
Chopin wrote the two piano concertos when he was only 19 and 20; they were among the last works that he composed in Poland before leaving for France. Filled with youthful fire and freshness, the works showcase the pianists virtuosity, and contain much of interest for the orchestral musicians as well, including poignant solo interludes for clari-net and bassoon.
For Daniel Barenboim, both concertos are loyal companions that bear witness to his own journey through life, providing a connection with Brahms himself: in the course of his life, Brahms played the First Piano Concerto thirty-five times, the Second Piano Concerto some forty times. And it was as the conductor of both these works that Brahms bade farewell to the stage in Berlin on 10 January 1896. The orchestra of the Staatskapelle Berlin has a warm, round and nuanced sound and tries to set properly the conversation with soloist. In doing so DG has crapped on their Brahms 1 & 2 disc from Helene Grimaud and Andris Nelsons released barely a year or two ago.
