Comes and Goes is a beautifully delicate tune. one of Dan's trademarks. he paints a real picture of being alone in Tennessee as fall's beginning to fade to winter. Crow is kind of haunting and forceful, showing Dan's versatility. The Last Nail he sings of a lost love, but his electric guitar is a key part of the song. I actually purchased this album only recently to complete my Dan Fogelberg collection, and was very pleasantly surprised. This album didn't receive much airplay at all, none of the songs were considered 'hits', but don't let that dissuade you. If you enjoy older Dan Fogelberg (Netherlands, Phoenix, Souvenirs) do not hesitate to grab this one.

The woman's like the night She comes and goes She breaks my heart each day And never knows, And the time I spend in sorrow Will match the time I live And the time that't left is All I have to give. The woman's like the tide She comes and goes She knows the things that I can just suppose. And the time I spend in sorrow Will match the time that she laughs And the songs I sing cannot explain but half.
The album comes during a resurgence in Fogelberg and his music. Listen to A Tribute to Dan Fogelberg here: A Tribute to Dan Fogelberg track listing
Fogelberg was a skilled guitarist, as he shows in the overdubbed solo at 1:00. His lyrics about a troubled but strong woman avoid sentimentality while his voice cracks slightly with a melancholy that seems genuine. In his next two albums, Souvenirs (1974) and Captured Angel (1975), Fogelberg moved more solidly toward a folk sound. The final Fogelberg album is Love in Time. This was released by his widow in 2009, two years after his death from cancer at 56. It comprises the title song (a charity single he’d written for her as a Valentine’s gift in 2005) plus 11 unpublished songs.
Dan Fogelberg, the youngest of three sons, was born in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Margaret (née Irvine), a classically trained pianist, and Lawrence Peter Fogelberg, a high school band director who spent most of his career at Peoria's Woodruff High School and Pekin High School. Dan's mother was a Scottish immigrant, and his father was of Swedish descent. His father would later be the inspiration for the song, "Leader of the Band".
